NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Tennessee Titans Head Coach Mike Vrabel made it official Wednesday: Ryan Tannehill will be the starting quarterback this Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers replacing Marcus Mariota.
"Our offense needs a spark," Vrabel said. "We're hoping Ryan can provide that for us."
Mariota had been the Titans starter ever since he was drafted second overall in 2015, but was benched in the third quarter of last Sunday's loss at Denver after tossing two interceptions. "I see (this benching) as an opportunity to learn and grow," said Mariota. "I believe this experience will make me better, it's my job to support Ryan like he supported me."
Vrabel left open the possibility of Mariota winning his job back. "I wouldn't rule it out, we're going to need Marcus (again) at some point " Vrabel said.
Meanwhile, Tannehill, who was traded to the Titans from the Miami Dolphins this past offseason, says he's looking forward to the opportunity. "I'm excited," he said. "I hope I can help move the ball score some points."
The Titans and Chargers kickoff Sunday at 3:05 p.m. CT on NewsChannel 5.
