NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A proposal under consideration by the NFL could see a 17 game regular season along with an expanded playoff format.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Wednesday night the changes to the playoffs would happen immediately, with the regular season changes kicking in in the 2021-22 season.
The playoffs would add an additional wild card team from each conference, bringing the number of playoff teams to 14.
Only the top team in each conference would receive a bye in the first round, with the remaining six teams playing in the wild card round. Under the current format, the top two teams in each conference get a bye.
The proposal would need to accepted as a part of a new collective bargaining agreement between the league and the player's association.
