IU's Lilly King takes gold medal at Rio Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Indiana University's Lilly King swam her way into the history books Monday, taking the gold medal and setting a new Olympic record in the women's 100-meter breaststroke.

King nabbed the win with a time of 1:04.93. Her top rival, Russian Yulia Efimova, finished second at 1:05.50.

U.S. swimmer Catherine Meili, of Columbia University, took the bronze medal with a time of 1:05.69.

King becomes only the second gold medal winner from her hometown of Evansville, Indiana. She joins former MLB pitcher Andrew Benes, who won a gold medal with the United States National Baseball Team at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

King wasn't the only Hoosier who earned a medal in the pool at Rio.

Purdue's David Boudia and Steele Johnson took home the silver medal for the men's 10-meter synchronized diving event Monday.

On Sunday, fellow IU swimmer Blake Pieroni helped the men's 400-meter freestyle team take second place in the preliminaries. Michael Phelps, Caeleb Dressel, Ryan Held and Nathan Adrian swam for the U.S. in the finals, earning a gold medal for themselves and Pieroni.

IU swimmer Cody Miller also earned himself a bronze medal Sunday with a time of 58.87 in the men's 100-meter breaststroke event. The time set a new American record for the event.
