Duquesne To Hire Akron's Dambrot As Head Coach

Posted

Duquesne has reached a deal in principle to hire Akron head coach Keith Dambrot to the same position, industry sources confirm to Newschannel 5. The story was first reported Monday evening by pittsburghsportsnow.com.

The Dambrot hiring ends a long search for the Dukes, who fired Jim Ferry at the end of the season. Several candidates publicly turned the job down, but Dambrot gives the school a highly respected head coach with a proven track record.

The 58 year old Dambrot, who's father starred at Duquesne in the 50's, took over Akron in 2004, compiling a record of 305-138 including 13 straight 20-win seasons. He is expected to sign a seven-year deal worth around a million dollars per season.

He inherits a program that hasn't reached the NCAA Tournament since 1976, but has laid forth plans for $40 million in renovations to upgrade the AJ Palumbo Center.
