Drake has reached an agreement in principle to make Furman basketball coach Niko Medved it's next head coach, a source familiar with the negotiations told NewsChannel 5.
Medved, 43, is 62-70 in four seasons at Furman, including a 23-11 record this year. Medved has led the Paladins to the semifinals of the CIT and is expected to coach Wednesday's game at St. Peter's.
He will replace interim coach Jeff Rutter, who was also interviewed for the Drake vacancy. Rutter went 6-17 this season after taking over in December following the resignation of Ray Giacoletti.
Medved, who played and coached at Minnesota, went just 9-21 in his first season at Furman, but led the Paladins to 11 wins in his second season, then a 19-16 record in year three.
It was reported earlier this week that Drake had offered the job to South Dakota's Craig Smith, but Smith announced Wednesday night that he was staying put with the Coyotes.
