NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — After coming up one game short of the state tournament a year ago, the Monterey Wildcats were determined to get back to the state's elite eight in 2020.
They did just that, which is why we honor them as part of our ongoing Curtain Call series to honor the great individual athletes and teams in the state. But, like many on this list, Monterey’s season was cut short by the COVID-10 pandemic.
Yet that does not diminish anything the Wildcats did. Coach Adam West’s team went 27-7 behind the strength of its seven seniors. And the team got better as the season went along.
The Wildcats won their four postseason games by an average of 11 points with senior Peyton West averaging nearly 20 points a night. Cayden Jones and Silas Randolph also chipped in double figures in points as Monterey avenged a district loss to Gordonsville and then beat Clay County for the region title.
Monterey’s 44-41 win over Fayetteville in Sub-state marked the seniors 100th career win and sent them back to state for the second time in three years.
They never got to run out on the floor in Murfreesboro, but the Wildcats accomplished their goal and proved themselves elite once again.
