KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - After playing the most true freshmen of any Football Bowl Subdivision team this past season, Tennessee has added a heralded recruiting class full of newcomers who also could contribute right away.
The Volunteers signed a class that appeared destined for a final top-five ranking among most major recruiting services. Tennessee had a similarly rated class last year and ended up playing 23 true freshmen on its way to a 7-6 finish that ended a string of four straight losing seasons.
Tennessee's class includes five players rated as five-star prospects by at least one recruiting service. That group includes running back Alvin Kamara -- a junior-college transfer -- plus defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie, defensive end Kyle Phillips, offensive tackle Drew Richmond and wide receiver Preston Williams.
