16-0. Perfection. That's what the Belmont women's basketball team accomplished Saturday in a 87-71 win over Tennessee State that caps off a perfect regular season in the OVC.
Sophomore guard Darby Maggard led the Bruins with 20 points as they jumped to a 45-30 halftime lead and cruised in the second half.
After the game the Bruins' seniors were presented with the OVC championship trophy in front of a capacity crowd on Homecoming at the Curb Events Center.
In all, Cameron Newbauer's Bruins have now won 18 straight games to finish the regular season after losing at Minnesota December 14th. That's the second longest winning streak in the country, trailing only no. 1 UConn's record streak of 103 straight wins.
At 24-5 overall, Belmont will be the heavy favorite to capture the OVC Tournament title and a second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament when they tip off against no. 8 seed Southeast Missouri Wednesday afternoon at 1pm.
The Bruins are focused and ready for the next challenge, but at least for one afternoon, they enjoyed the rarified air of perfection with a victory that put an exclamation point on a championship season.
