Austin Peay is finalizing a deal with South Carolina associate head coach Matt Figger to be the school's next head coach, sources familiar with the negotiations tell Newschannel 5.

An official announcement is expected Thursday.

Figger is a hot name thanks to his position as Frank Martin's right hand man on South Carolina's improbable run to it's first ever Final Four. The Gamecocks will face Gonzaga in a national semifinal in Phoenix on Saturday at 5:09 p.m. (Newschannel 5).

Figger has spent five years as an assistant at South Carolina, moving into the associate head coach role when Brad Underwood left to become the head coach at Stephen F. Austin.

Figger also serves as the Gamecocks' recruiting coordinator, as he did while serving under Martin at Kansas State from 2007-11.

He previously served as director or basketball operations at Arkansas and as an assistant at South Alabama under John Pelphrey and has a decade of experience in the junior college ranks.

A native of Jenkins, KY, Figger, played baseball at Pikeville College before completing his degree at Eastern Kentucky.

He replaces legendary coach Dave Loos, who retired at the end of the season following 27 seasons at the school.
