SMYRNA, Tenn. (WTVF) — Smyrna Elementary School is transitioning to remote learning through September 1 after several students and teachers were placed on a precautionary quarantine.
Rutherford County Schools confirmed Tuesday that 53 students and eight teachers are either showing potential symptoms of COVID-19 or they are a close contact of someone who is showing symptoms.
Communications Director James Evans said contact tracing determined this is possibly due to these students being in the same neighborhood or sharing a bus route. As a result, the school is switching to distance learning to help mitigate any additional exposure.
“We know this is going to be an inconvenience for some parents and that many of you likely have questions about logistics, laptop check-outs, and other issues,” Evans said in part.
He said the school’s principal will be issuing a follow-up message to all parents to discuss logistics and additional details.
Evans said there are now two schools out of the district's 49 that are currently on quarantine and are teaching via distance learning.
