NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The number of new unemployment claims in Tennessee jumped to nearly 22,000 last week, the highest number since late-July.
The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development reported the latest unemployment data Thursday, saying 21,954 new claims were filed during the week ending on January 9. That’s up from the week before that when 16,554 new claims were filed.

Nationwide, the number of people seeking unemployment aid soared last week to 965,000, the most since late August and evidence that the resurgent virus has caused a spike in layoffs.
The latest figures for jobless claims, by the Labor Department, remain at levels never seen until the virus struck. After declining over the summer, weekly claims have been stuck above 700,000 since September.
