NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A mid-state principal made good on a promise to his students by spending the night on the roof.

Doctor Russell Young spent the night on the roof of West End Middle School after the students met their fundraising goal for the "Invest in West" fundraiser by the PTSO to help fund school programs.

"We really wanted to work to incentivize it and get people to participate; so we came up with the idea that if we reached that goal, I would sleep on the roof! We not only reached it, we went $3,000 over the goal, so, really exciting. And again, they do so much to help our school and our community, that a small sacrifice on my part, seemed like a good way to encourage people to participate," said Executive Principal Russel Young.

He wasn't expecting it to be so cold outside, but teachers are lending blankets to help him get through the night.

"We're pretty prepared. I've got some of my teachers who have helped me out, bringing in extra layers and some gear, you know. Our football coach brought me in some quarterback hand warmers, and we've got gloves and jackets. I think I'm gonna be ok," Young said.

He plans to do something a bit less extreme next year.
