Some middle school students in southeast Nashville celebrated the start the 2016-2017 school year in a new building.
The Valor Voyager Academy opened its doors to fifth and sixth grade students a few weeks ago, but the school held a grand opening Wednesday.
Supporters like Mayor Megan Barry were in attendance for the opening tour of the converted Lowe's building.
The Academy's founder said the celebration was a way to show the public why the new school is different from others.
"We're really passionate about socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic diversity. Our background of scholars, about 50 percent come from socioeconomic disadvantaged backgrounds and 50 percent don't. And we have no majority race or ethnicity in this school," said Todd Dickson.
The Valor Voyager is the second Valor Academy in the Nolensville Pike area. A high school was also expected to open in 2018.
