NASHVILLE, Tenn (WTVF) — Six months ago, multiple tornadoes tore through Middle Tennessee - a day many will never forget.

Rodney Whitaker will always remember March 3, 2020 because that's when Whitaker says God’s grace that saved him from the tornado that hit his North Nashville neighborhood.

He and his neighbors had to survive living without electricity for weeks. Whitaker says it's hard to believe it's been six months already.

"I saw all the trees, there used to be a free line there, they all just laid down," said Whitaker, "The wind came up through here and it was like (makes howling sound), that’s all you heard."

The month of September is National Preparedness Month.

"You have to have water, canned goods, dry food that won’t spoil. You got to have that," said Whitaker.

It’s the time of year where the country encourages and reminds all of us to prepare and plan for a disaster like a tornado - something Whitaker says he did ahead of March 3.

Now, he’s asking everyone else to do the same.

"You have to stay prepared, I suggest everybody. Toilet tissue, batteries, candles; I have candles, I have matches, I have lighters, I have flashlights."

Other tools include weather radios and escape plans. Whitaker says it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
