Tennessee in top 10 states where women are killed by men

(WTVF) — Tennessee was named one of the states with the highest rates of women murdered by men, according to a recent study conducted by Violence Policy Center.

The study analyzed national homicide data from 2017 that was submitted to the FBI by local law enforcement agencies. Tennessee tied with South Carolina for No. 5.

The top ten states where women are murdered by men are:
1. Alaska
2. Louisiana
3. Arkansas
4. Nevada
5. Tennessee / South Carolina
7. Arizona
8. Montana
9. Vermont
10. Georgia

Nationally, the research found women were murdered by their husbands or a romantic partner 11 times more than women who were killed by strangers.

In Tennessee, 69 females were victims of homicide in 2017. Ninety percent of the women were killed by someone they knew and 76 percent were killed by gunfire. The study found 2017 was the highest percentage of Tennessee women killed by men with guns compared to the last decade.

The rate of female murder victims is also rising in the Metro Nashville - Davidson County area, where nine women were killed by men in domestic violence homicides in 2017.
