Specialized Counselors To Help 30 High Schools Boost College Enrollment

Some Tennessee high schools have fallen behind the rest of the state when it comes to sending seniors to college, but officials hope the new program Advise TN will change that.

A total of 30 specialized college counselors were set to begin new jobs Monday inside Tennessee high schools that are falling behind.

Governor Bill Haslam invested about $2.5 million into Advise TN initiative over the next three years.

Tennessee currently sends about 68.5 percent  of high school seniors to college. If schools fall short of that average, they were eligible to apply for their own counselor through Advise TN.

La Vergne High School will participate in the program.

"Last year we had 49 percent of senior continue with college," said La Vergne counselor Lauren Little. "That's good, but not good enough. We want to see that number increase."

Little said the program will allow the school to better track who applies to college, who is accepted, and who fills out FAFSA forms for financial aid. The goal will be to steadily increase those numbers over the program's three years.
