Body of Dr. James Smith found 3 days after he went missing

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Dr. James Smith's body has been found, three days after he went missing in Overton County.

Smith was 83 years old, suffered from dementia, and lived in Cookeville. He was a well-known respected businessman with a local dental practice.

Officials said he was last seen at his farm in Overton County. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office helicopter unit found his Chevy pickup truck between Puncheon Creek Lane and Copeland Cove Road Thursday morning. His body was found Sunday afternoon in the same general rural area.

Officials upgraded their efforts after 46 hours of searching the rural areas in Overton County. More than 100 to 200 volunteers, the Overton County Sheriff’s Office, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, Tennessee Highway Patrol, and the 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office participated in the search.
