SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — We're a few days away from veterans day.
Shelbyville honored their veterans today with a parade through the town. Veterans day is a day where we celebrate freedom because of our soldiers.
For Melissa Metcalf LeRoy, veterans day is extra special this year for her and her family.
Her father, Vietnam veteran Oscar William Metcalf, was supposed to be on an honor flight to Washington, DC in April.
LeRoy says seeing the Vietnam Memorial and finally getting some recognition and acknowledgment for his service in the Vietnam War was supposed to help him with his PTSD.
Unfortunately because of the coronavirus pandemic he couldn't go and then was diagnosed with brain cancer. He recently passed away.
This weekend, the town was able to honor him with a presentation including giving his family his quilt of valor and orange heart metal.
"I know today he is smiling,: said LeRoy.
This family is asking others to volunteer to help a disabled American veteran during the pandemic and holiday season. Those with PSTD are needing community support.
