GILES COUNTY, Tenn. (WTVF) — The search for a paddler missing on the Elk River since Sunday has been suspended due to darkness.
TWRA says a 51-year-old man put his canoe in the Elk River Saturday at Highway 31 in Giles County. He was going to paddle, camp and then return Sunday.
He was last heard from by phone Saturday at 6 p.m.
According to TWRA, a canoe and a cooler believed to belong to the man were found below in the state line in Alabama waters.
Alabama Marine Police have been notified, but have been unable to search the area by boat due to water flows.
Tennessee Highway Patrol has searched the area from the air with a helicopter.
Crews will begin searching by water tomorrow if conditions are safe and if the water level continues to fall.
