MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WTVF) — All Rutherford Co. students will learn remotely beginning Wed., Dec. 16 until winter break, due to COVID-19.

School officials made the announcement Monday, saying all schools will operate on distance learning for the remainder of the week.

Officials said schools will be open Tuesday for in-person learners. Teachers and administrators will then share additional information with parents and students about the specific plan for Wednesday through Friday.

"We reached this difficult decision after receiving updated information this afternoon from the Tennessee Department of Health, which shows that Rutherford County now has more than 3,100 active cases and a spread of .96%, which is the highest that we have experienced this school year," said Communications Director James Evans in a letter to parents.

Rutherford County students winter break begins Mon., Dec. 21. Robertson County School officials announced a similar decision Monday.
