and last updated

A case of Potomac horse fever has been confirmed in Davidson County.

The case prompted the State Veterinarian to issue an alert to all horse owners.

The bacteria originates from freshwater snails and can be deadly. Horses are exposed when drinking from creeks or rivers and then can suffer from colic and fever.

It is not transmitted horse to horse.

Another serious disease, strangles, was confirmed in horses in Shelby County back in May.

Neither of these illnesses is a threat to human health.

There are ways to protect your horses. Contact your local veterinarian for more information. Read more here
