One person was killed and another injured after a vehicle slammed into steel light pole overnight in Sumner County.

The crash happened around 12:45 a.m. Monday on Red River Road near Main Street in Gallatin.

Officials from the Gallatin Police Department said the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when they ran over the railroad tracks and crashed into the steel police.

The force of the impact was so strong, parts of the engine were found in the parking lot of the nearby Shell gas station.

The driver died at the scene. One passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported by ground to the hospital. Neither identity was released.

Investigators were working to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.

Red River Road was blocked for four hours while crews processed the scene.
