Free legal help is now available to seniors in Tennessee. This new program is designed for low-income Tennesseans who are 60 and older. And these folks can get free legal assistance no matter where they live in the state.
A new statewide network of attorneys known as the Tennessee Senior Law Alliance can help you if you're having trouble getting benefits or healthcare, if you're having housing or rental issues, if you are the victim of physical, emotional, or financial abuse or exploitation or if you need help with basic estate planning like creating a will.
This is all thanks to huge settlement from a nursing home case back in 2013 in Davidson County. There was a long and drawn out court battle afterwards over how to spend the $35 million from the settlement. In the end, the judge decided late last year that the money would be divided between seven charities focused on senior citizens.
The Tennessee Senior Law Alliance got $5.5 million dollars from the settlement. This group is made up of the Legal Aid societies across the state. Their goal is to help thousands of older Tennesseans, especially in rural areas where it's not always easy to get legal help, especially free legal help.
To reach them, call their toll-free, easy to remember number. It's 1-844-HELP4TN. That's 1-844-435-7486.
Money from the settlement will also be used to provide transportation and dental care to seniors and help repair their homes.
