Neighbors Discuss Music Row Design Plans

The Metro Planning Department met with Music Row residents and business owners to discuss details of latest design plans for the area.

During the meeting at the Midtown Hills Police Precinct, the goal was to get feedback from neighbors on the current version of the design plan.

“We are looking at the existing zoning and policies and figuring out what we can do to change it without taking anything away from property owners to make it a more walkable, livable area,” said Stephanie McCullough, a planner with the Metro Planning Department.

McCullough presented the plans and neighbors were able to ask questions and provide feedback.

“I don’t think we’ve done enough to show the character of Music Row and let fans and tourists know why this is so important,” said John Dotson, the founder of the Music Row Neighborhood Association.

The neighborhood currently features a mix of homes and businesses.  Plans will keep the mix of retail and residential areas and also feature height restrictions for any new buildings.

The battle to preserve the area started in June of 2014 with efforts to save Studio A.  Last year, the Planning Department voted to hold off on new zoning for developments on Music Row after a series of condos and boutique hotels were proposed for the area.

Dotson said neighborhood participation in the process has been strong, and he hopes the end result finds a balance between preservation and new development.

There will be another community meeting in May to look at the plan.  The final plan will be presented to the Metro Planning Commission in June.
