Many retailers are announcing they will be closed on Thanksgiving this year — a change from years past when more stores began opening on the holiday to beat their competitors to offer big Black Friday bargains.
Consumers have been crying foul over having to leave Thanksgiving celebrations in order to get deep discounts. Some have also supported employees of the retailers that open on the holiday, saying they shouldn't have to choose between earning wages and spending time celebrating togetherness with loved ones.
Hhgregg and Office Depot are the latest retailers to announce they will be closed on Thanksgiving. The consumer electronics chain said it wants its associates to be able to stay home with family, and it will open at 7 a.m. on Black Friday.
A website that tracks all-things Black Friday has provided a list of retailers that vowed to be closed. Some listed include Costco, Crate and Barrel, Hobby Lobby, Home Depot, IKEA, Menards, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and more.
The Mall of America, the largest shopping mall in the country, says it will also be closed.
This year, Thanksgiving is on Thursday, Nov. 24.
