GILROY, Calif. (WTVF) — A gunman killed three people and wounded 12 others Sunday during the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California. Playing the festival was Nashville local George Birge and his band Waterloo Revival.

Birge and his band mates played the event earlier that day. Thankfully, they had already left and were at the airport when the shots rang out.

He said the incident happened in the same area where they were doing a meet and greet with fans earlier in the day.

"In this industry, you see this happen and when you wake up to see news like this it's like getting punched in the gut."

Police say the gunman, Santino William Legan, used an assault-type rifle and opened fire on three local police officers who immediately responded. A 6-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl and a man in his 20s. died in the shooting.

Birge expressed his heartbreak over the lives lost and said the band is already trying to put together a benefit show for the community.

"Love and positive energy will prevail in the end," said Birge.
