A Metro Nashville Public Schools teacher known for making a difference in the lives of her students was named the 2017-2018 Tennessee Teacher of the Year.
Cicely Woodard teaches eight grade math at West End Middle School.
A banquet was held in Nashville Thursday night for the nine finalists and their family and friends.
Woodard won top honors amongst eight other teachers across the state.
Woodard, originally from Memphis, has taught in Tennessee for 13 years and says she's humbled to receive the award.
"I believe that being chosen as the Tennessee Teacher of the Year simply means that I represent thousands of teachers across the state who show up at school every day, believing in kids, believing that they can learn and believing that what we really do matters in the classroom," Woodard said.
Woodard will represent teachers in Tennessee at national programs and will serve on a board with the other finalists that make up each region of the state.
