NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The Metropolitan Board of Public Education discussed a plan to close four schools in the North Nashville area ahead of the 2020-2021 school year at its meeting on Tuesday night.

The school board said consolidating the schools will save the district more than $3 million and provide more opportunities and resources for students.

It was already decided earlier this year to close Gra-Mar Middle Prep and merge it will Jere Baxter Middle School.

The other three schools remain up for consideration. MNPS said a vote to consolidate these schools won't happen until May 19.

The plan is Buena Vista Elementary would be consolidated into Jones Piadeia Elementary Magnet School. Robert E. Lillard Elementary would merge into Alex Green or Cumberland Elementary. Joelton Middle School would be consolidated into Haynes Middle School.

"Metro Schools ReimaginED is an opportunity to better focus resources to serve, support, and strengthen our students throughout the district. Creating optimal learning environments through consolidations are only one part of an overall strategy to redesign academic programming and student, family and community support networks that are unique to the needs of the schools and clusters," said Director of Schools Dr. Adrienne Battle. "While our current and multiple challenges have accelerated the timeline for implementation of some of these changes, I believe we are putting these clusters and their students on the path towards greater success and improved outcomes for all students across the district."

The school board will vote on the issue next Tuesday. If approved, students would start their classes at the new designated school this coming August.
