NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Thousands of Tennesseans are unable to pay their medical bills, leading the state to rank 10th in the nation for having the highest rate of medical debt, a new study found.

The study, conducted by the Sycamore Institute, found that the median amount of debt for Tennesseans is around $740. The group also found thatone in four residents in the state had some kind of medical debt on their credit report in 2018.

"The most surprising thing we found is how common this was ... it's something that is an obstacle to economic mobility," says Brian Straessle with the Sycamore Institute.
