A west Tennessee prison was placed on lockdown after an escape attempt was foiled by officials.

The incident happened Tuesday at the West Tennessee State Penitentiary in Henning, located about halfway between Memphis and Dyersburg.

While many details surrounding the attempt were unknown, officials with the Tennessee Department of Corrections said inmate Arturo Perez was caught before he could escape.

Officials said he was not able to breach any fences or leave the secure area of the prison.

Perez has been serving an eight-year sentence out of Davidson County for attempted aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary.

He's also serving a two-year sentence out of Sumner County for Reckless Endangerment. TDOC said the Sumner County sentence is running concurrently with the Davidson County sentence.

The prison remains on lockdown while the investigation continues. No threat was posed to the community.
