'Warming Up' Vehicle Can Be Illegal

Many people have a bad habit on cold days, and it's one that just might get them a ticket or cause them to have their car stolen. We learned more about Metro’s law on leaving cars running to warm them up in cold weather.

Officials with the Metro Police Department said in the past month 39 of the 87 cars stolen were left running without the driver around.

Those who leave their car running can face a fine if caught, and that amount has been left up to a judge.

The only way a driver can leave their car running legally is if they have a remote start because the car will still be locked and there will not be any keys inside for someone to drive away.

Police said some thieves even drive around looking for vehicles left running because its such an easy target.
