Man Accused Of Shooting Sumner County Deputy

Posted

A suspect was taken into custody after allegedly shooting a Sumner County sheriff's deputy in the chest while he was responding to a domestic dispute.

James Cummins, age 50, was arrested Wednesday evening and charged with attempted first degree murder in the shooting of Deputy Philip Douglas.

Sheriff’s officials said Deputy Douglas responded to a home on Old Highway 31 in Bethpage around 5:30 p.m. for a domestic dispute call.

When Douglas got out of his car, someone inside the house opened fire on him.

Investigators said Douglas fired back, but in the process was struck in the chest. However, his bullet proof vest spared him from serious injury.

At that time, a second deputy pulled up to the scene. After a brief pause in the gunfire, Cummins was taken into custody.

The suspect was not hurt, but Douglas was taken to an area hospital.

Douglas has been working with the sheriff’s office for years, but recently became a deputy about a year and a half ago.

“The deputy [Douglas] is fantastic. He’s one of the very best," said Chief Deputy Aaron Pickard. "He has some of the best tactics and he’s one of the most well-prepared that we have."

Cummins was held on a $750,000 bond.
