Two people were shot over the weekend when an altercation broke out at a birthday party in Shelbyville.
Officials said they responded to the scene around 2:20 a.m. Sunday at an event venue that had been rented out for the 30th birthday party of Dequan Twilley, a former ETSU basketball player.
Officers arrived and found multiple rounds of various caliber ammunition in the venue and in the parking lot.
According to police, around 30 people were at the venue when a fight took place, in which someone attempted to disarm a man identified as Corey Carlos Garrett.
Authorities said Garrett reportedly shot his gun at the ceiling during the struggle, and that’s when another party goer shot at Garrett.
Officials said Garrett was struck in his torso, and another man at the party, identified as Wayne Shelton, was shot in the arm by a stray bullet.
Reports stated additional shots were allegedly fired in the parking lot as everyone fled from the scene.
Authorities confirmed Garrett was taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was listed in critical but stable condition. Shelton was treated and released from Tennova Healthcare in Shelbyville.
