Tennessee's longest-serving lawmaker, Douglas Henry III, has been laid to rest.

Senator Henry passed away late Sunday night at the age of 90.

Friends, family, and several towering figures in Tennessee politics attended his funeral Friday. It began at 11 a.m. at Downtown Presbyterian Church in Nashville.

Henry was one of the state's most renowned political figures. He was a World War II veteran from Nashville who began his career as a Democrat in the 50s.

"Beyond the elections and Senate chamber Douglas Henry was a man of high ideals and strong integrity," his son Bob Henry said.

He was first elected to a House seat in 1954 before being elected to the Senate in 1970.

"There is no way else to say it, we lost an exceptional man this week, a giant," Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally said about Senator Henry.

On Thursday, Henry became the ninth person in history to lie in state at the Capitol, the last being Governor Austin Peay in 1927. A long line of people waited to see his casket draped with a Tennessee flag.
