Old Franklin Gym Torn Down For Battlefield

More changes have been taking place in Franklin to preserve a Civil War battlefield.

Crews started demolishing an old building Thursday.

The structure, a gymnasium, was the last visible piece of the old Franklin High School, which once stood at the corner of Columbia Avenue and West Fowlkes Street.

The old gym, which has been abandoned for more than a decade, sat on part of the site of the Battle of Franklin.

“The decision was made a long time ago to perform this land swap between the county and the state, and the building’s really been empty for years,” said Eric Jacobson, CEO of the Battle of Franklin Trust. “It’s become very much a liability. So it’s really time for it to come down, and we can reclaim the past.”

After the gym has been completely demolished, the area will become green space as part of the Carter Hill Battlefield Park.
