Murfreesboro Parties Nearly Collapse Apartments

Posted

A weekend of fun turned into frightening situations at two different apartment complexes in Murfreesboro.

Firefighters were called out to the Student Quarters apartments off of Greenland Drive after reports that the ceiling in one of the units was collapsing Friday night.

"When I walked in you could see the floor obviously sloping dropping about 4 to 6 inches from the threshold of the door," said Robert Holtz , Deputy Director Building and Codes.

A similar situation happened Saturday night at a different apartment complex.

Police said when they got to Vie Apartments on Wenlon Drive just before 1 in the morning, they saw more than a hundred people leaving an apartment on the second floor, the residents below said their ceiling was also starting to cave in.

"Everybody was fortunate. Like I said, you put that many people in a small area there's a chance that someone could've gotten hurt seriously" said Carl Peas, Assistant Fire Marshal.

In both instances, the apartments were declared unsafe leaving several residents without a place to live.

The management at Vie Apartments released the following statement regarding this weekend's incident.

“We value our residents and the integrity of the community. We are thankful that during this isolated incident no one was injured. We are taking the proper steps to ensure the policies in place are followed by our residents.”

The codes inspector said there were no rules as to how many people you can have in your apartment, and was something renters had check with their apartment manager about.
