Fire Possibly Caused By Lightning Destroys House

Lightning from storms overnight may be to blame for a massive fire that destroyed a home in Mt. Juliet.

The fire happened at a home in the 800 block of Harrisburg Lane around 11 p.m. Thursday.

The couple who lived there said they were asleep when they heard a loud boom.

After hearing the fire alarm go off, the husband said he went to check on the attic and it was engulfed in smoke.

In the few minutes it took fire crews to get to the scene, the flames had ripped through about half of the home, that's how fast the wind was whipping as the storms moved through the area.

Even though the house was destroyed, firefighters thoughtfully grabbed a few wedding photos they found inside, a few memories to hold onto as the couple tries to figure out what to do next.

Despite having to fight the fire during storm conditions, no injuries were reported in this incident. Three people got out of the home safely.

"It's not so much that you're keeping an eye out for the lightning as much as you're keeping it in the back of your mind," said Captain Steve Fox of Wilson County Emergency Management. "The gust of the wind was just so heavy that it was pushing the flames and the fire back on my guys, and we just, we had to back out."

It took a few hours for the fire to be completely extinguished.

Further details on the fire had not been released by authorities as the investigation remained ongoing.
