A 2-year-old child has been listed as stable after being hit by an SUV in North Nashville, and the driver has been arrested and charged with vehicular assault.

The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. Saturday in the 1800 block of Meade Avenue.

According to those on scene, the tan SUV, driven by Steven Works, veered off the street and into the yard where the boy was playing outside. He was on a red bike when he was hit.

Authorities said Works ran over the boy, knocked his shoes off, and flattened the bicycle before crashing into a parked car.

Works allegedly had an open beer bottle with about three ounces left inside on the floor of the SUV. Authorities also found him in possession of 1.4 grams of a white rock, which tested positive for a cocaine base, along with .3 grams of a powder which also tested positive for cocaine.

The suspect was taken to a nearby business, away from a crowd that had formed, where he showed impairment during three tests.

Works agreed to give blood, which has been sent to be tested for alcohol and narcotics.

According to witnesses, Works was asleep and had been parked on the street before the wreck happened.

Authorities said Works was cooperating with the investigation. The child was taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt for the treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

No further details were available.
