It was a day of celebration for members of Mount Zion Baptist Church as people from across Nashville gathered to honor the church's leader.
Hundreds gathered for the unveiling of the Bishop Joseph W. Walker III Overpass sign on Saturday.
The overpass has been located between the 1100 and 1200 Block of Jefferson Street. Multiple city and state leaders were there for the event.
The bill sponsors had an uphill battle getting to the unveiling after some Metro Council members were opposed to naming a structure after someone who was still alive.
But on Saturday morning, Mayor Megan Barry said it was a day to build bridges and to honor a man who does just that.
"Right now we need people who are uniters, and one of the things that Bishop Walker has done really well through his different initiatives to combat youth violence, to bring more financial stability to our community, is critical," said Mayor Barry.
Though this wasn't something Bishop Walker asked for, he said he hopes the overpass can inspire others to make a change.
"I’m hoping that people will come across this overpass and begin to think, 'Wow, what can I do to really build bridges?'" said Bishop Joseph W. Walker III, Mt. Zion Baptist Church pastor.
The naming of the overpass was in conjunction with Bishop Walker's 25th anniversary as the pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
