Landfill Owners Make Changes Over Odor Concerns

The owners of a Rutherford County landfill have taken action to stop the stench that reaches the homes and yards of neighbors nearby.

Neighbors said the smell from the nearby landfill can get so bad at times, they nicknamed it "Mount Trashmore."

Republic Services, who owns the landfill, said it spent more than $2 million on more gas extraction wells and expansions of a system that sprays a cherry scented mist into the air that's designed to break apart odor molecules.

Republic said it was a direct response to the concerns from neighbors they've heard in the last few months.

The company said with additional steps they're taking in the next several weeks, they're confident that any odor from the area around Middle Point Landfill won't be coming from them, but it could be coming from the adjacent Rutherford county landfill or a nearby water treatment facility.

“Even though we are making some accelerated investments to make sure we're doing everything we can to control any odor from emanating from the site, it is entirely possible that neighbors could detect odor from some of these other known sources,” said Russ Knocke, with Republic Services.

Republic said if neighbors still have concerns about odors in the area, they can report them to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
