If you usually opt for cash back while checking out at Kroger, there is a new fee you need to be aware of.
The grocery store is tacking on a 50-cent fee for debit card cashback transactions.
Here's the breakdown:
- No fee for any request $0.99 and under
- $0.50 for cash back between $1 and $100
- $3.50 for cash back between $100.01 and $300
Kroger explained the new implementation in this Twitter response:
Our cash back program allows customers to get up to $300 cash back, and that’s a convenience they can’t get at any of our competitors. When customers scan their Kroger card, the .50 cent fee is waived for cash back up to $100 and the fee is $3.00 for the amount higher than $100.
Frustrated customers took to Twitter in recent days to express their disapproval with the new fees.

In response to one customer's tweet, Kroger said their fee is a result of "banks & other retailers raising ATM fees & limiting the amount of cashback."
We are sorry to hear about your feelings about the cashback fee! We have a fee due to banks & other retailers raising ATM fees & limiting the amount of cashback. We want to offer our customers a convenient, low cost, way to get their money. We hope you understand!

Customers cannot withdraw more than $300 in cash back at checkout.
