NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Judge William L. Campbell has blocked Tennessee's controversial abortion law, preventing the state from implementing the law while it's in the court's hands.

Judge Campbell granted a preliminary injunction from the Memphis Center for Reproductive Health on Friday, saying

The law in question would ban abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is typically at about six weeks into pregnancy with no exceptions for rape or incest. It also makes it a felony for a doctor to perform an abortion without following a list of regulations beforehand.

Shortly after Governor Bill Lee signed the bill into law, Judge Campbell issued a temporary restraining order at the request of several groups, including the Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood, and the ACLU.

Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union and other Tennessee abortion rights groups filed suit against the law in June when the bill was passed.
