HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. - Still in shock, the entire Hopkinsville community came together to say goodbye Friday, to a football player killed at practice Thursday night.
Jay'Von Quarles was helping to move a piece of practice equipment when it fell fatally hitting him in the head.
Friday in Hopkinsville hundreds came to pay their respects at the football field and show support for Quarles' family.
Quarles' aunt said all he ever wanted to do was play football, and he got to rejoin the team after having to sit out last season due to a medical condition.
"Oh yeah, he kept that smile," Darlene Quarles said. "He never had any sadness about him until he had that little sickness. They told him he wouldn't play football anymore. I guess he put it in his mind, 'Yes I am.'"
The students at Hopkinsville High School set up a GoFundMe accountfor Quarles' family.
School has been set to start in Hopkinsville next week.
Grief counselors will be on hand for anyone who may need them.
