Historical Marker Unveiled At Jack's BBQ

Posted

A historical marker was unveiled at the newest location of the well-known Nashville restaurant, Jack's BBQ.

Jack Cawthon of Jack's BBQ discovered that the restaurant's site on Charlotte Avenue was actually built on the same grounds as the original state penitentiary.

Cawthon said he found records dating back to the early 1800s on the property. They stated that it encompassed 10 acres between Church Street and Cedar Street (now Charlotte), and from 15th Avenue to the west.

The restaurant uses the lower west corner of the original prison property.

On Wednesday, city officials helped celebrate the restaurant when they unveiled the historical marker, honored Cawthon as Nashville's King of BBQ and celebrated his 70th birthday.

There are three Jack's BBQ locations in Nashville:

  • 1601 Charlotte Avenue
  • 416 Broadway
  • 334 W. Trinity Lane
