An arraignment was held Monday for five Grundy County High School football players who are accused of attempted aggravated rape.
According to Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum, the students held a freshman player on the ground and sexually assaulted him.
The alleged incident happened sometime between 5 and 6 a.m. during the football team's workout.
“We are not classifying this as a hazing. It is an attempted aggravated rape. I want to be clear on that. That’s our standpoint on this and that’s how we’re treating this,” Shrum said Monday.
The juveniles have been placed on house arrest and homebound education.
At this time, the Assistant District Attorney said it’s unknown if they’ll be charged as adults.
No pleas were entered during Monday’s hearing.
The judge in the case also recused himself due to conflicts. Another court date has been set for November 15.
