Group replanting trees destroyed in March tornadoes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — When the March tornadoes ripped through Nashville, it wasn’t just homes that were damaged. It also took away several trees.

It’s been the mission of the Nashville Tree Conservation Corps ever since to replace as many as they can.

Before and during the COVID-19 crisis, the group was able to plant 460 trees — in a socially distanced way — including some at Shelby Park, where the tornado hit.

They’re looking forward to the fall when they’ll be planting even more — hopefully without the social distancing restrictions in place.

"We will make the earth’s axis tilt toward Nashville from all the dirt we’ll be shoveling to move these trees into town," said Jim Gregory, with the Nashville Tree Conservation Corps.

While we’re all cooped up in our homes, the group says they’re looking at the positive in all this. Once this is all over, they say they hope more people will take the time to appreciate all that’s around them just a little bit more.
