A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Smyrna honoring fallen Blue Angel pilot, Jeff Kuss.
A statue of a fighter jet will be part of the tribute. The jet was delivered to the mid-state back in May. On Wednesday, city officials broke ground at Lee Victory Recreation Park in Smyrna.
Captain Kuss was killed during training for an air show in June of 2016. The mayor said it's been difficult for the community.
Organizers hoped to raise $1 million for the memorial park which will feature that Blue Angel plane.
So far, $1,025,000 has been raised, but still hope for an additional $275,000. To donate, text JEFF to 7177 or go to townofsmyrna.org.
