NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A staple of Nashville’s bar scene is closing its doors after 44 years.

Gold Rush, located across the street from Exit/In on Elliston Place, opened back in 1974 and is home to the second-oldest liquor license in Nashville.

General Manager Frank Hall said they’ve weathered several storms over the years – the bar went smoke-free a couple of years ago – but ultimately couldn’t continue operating because they were paying out more than they were bringing in.

Hall also cited Nashville’s ever-changing landscape as one factor, saying Elliston Place “isn’t what it used to be.”

“The problem is Nashville is changing all the time and everyone is looking at progress [but] that’s not necessary always a good thing because what’s happening is all of old Nashville is going away,” Hall said.

Hall was brought to the restaurant in 2003 when Joe Davis took over.

"We tried everything we could try [to survive]," he added.
