Mike Fitzhugh won the Republican primary for Rutherford County Sheriff.
Results Tuesday night showed he won with 79 percent of the vote, defeating Jim Tramel II.
Fitzhugh took over as interim sheriff in January 2017 when he was selected by Rutherford County commissioners following the suspension of Robert Arnold.
Commissioners said Fitzhugh would serve until the next election or until Arnold was cleared of charges; however, Arnold later entered a guilty plea, removing him from the position. Arnold pled guilty to wire fraud, honest services fraud, and extortion in the JailCigs case.
Fitzhugh will now face two Independent candidates, Deric Haynes and Bill West, in the August election.
