Family members of Garieon Simmons, who was accused of leading police on a fatal chase from Coffee County to Rutherford County, spoke out about his arrest.
Josh Simmons said he's been talking almost every day to his cousin Garieon. Simmons said Garieon made a bad decision in the heat of the moment.
In Rutherford County, Simmons slammed into a car pulling out of a parking lot. 28-year-old Jessica Campos was driving that car, and she was killed in the crash.
Garieon Simmons' cousin talked to us about how he reacted to her death.
“He was so sad for hurting that girl, he swore up and down he didn't mean to hurt anybody, he wouldn't hurt anybody, it wasn't his intention, he was just trying to get away from the police, he wasn't trying to hurt anyone,” Josh Simmons said.
Simmons said his cousin was afraid to pull over and end the chase because he thought police were going to shoot him.
